A wireless network is a wireless communications infrastructure that enables the transmission of data and information without the need for cables—whether telephone, coaxial, or optical. This is made possible by the use, for example, of radio-frequency equipment (radio-wave communications) or infrared communications (such as in IrDA-compatible devices). This technological infrastructure ranges from the use of radio transceivers (such as walkie-talkies) to artificial satellites in outer space. It is most commonly used in computer networks, serving as a means of accessing the internet from remote locations such as an office, a bar, an airport, a park, at home, etc.

A wireless personal area network (WPAN) is typically used to connect electronic devices that are physically close to one another and that are not intended to be detected from a distance. This type of network is ideal for eliminating the cables usually used to connect keyboards, printers, cell phones, PDAs, laptops, digital cameras, mice, and other devices. In newer devices, the Bluetooth standard is used to establish these connections, as well as infrared signals (similar to those used in TV remote controls). LANs (Local Area Networks) and WLANs (Wireless Local Area Networks) are local networks that use radio waves to establish a connection to the Internet or within a network, unlike fixed ADSL or cable TV networks, which typically use cables.

Bluetooth consists of a small network, called a piconet, that works at a distance of up to 10 meters and operates in the 2.4 GHz band, with a bandwidth of 1 Mbps. Ronja is a free and open technology for point-to-point wireless communication using visible light or infrared light transmitted through the air. Wi-Fi is a type of wireless network that communicates via radio waves and enables internet connections or data transmission between devices. Wi-Fi is the most widely used wireless network in the world because it employs various types of encryption (WPA/WPA2, WPA-PSK/WPA2-PSK, or WEP) that ensure strong network security. Wi-Fi can have a very long range, but this depends on the transmitting device. Today, Wi-Fi operates on two standard frequencies: 2.4 GHz and 5.1 GHz.

Mobile networks emerged later, due to the miniaturization of devices that provide wireless network connectivity. Today, it is possible to carry and use any device as part of daily life, enabling the transmission of data, voice, and video. Mobile networks encompass communication standards, hardware, software, and distribution infrastructure, as well as protocols, data formats, and specific technologies. Hardware includes devices or device components, while software refers to the features and requirements of applications.
